Holiday Banner Arts Contest
Through the Eyes of a Child: Christmas in Kingsport
The Arts Council of Greater Kingsport (ACGK), in conjunction with the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Kingsport, has announced plans for the first annual Holiday Banner Art Competition for area school students. This years’ theme, “Through the Eyes of a Child: Christmas in Kingsport”, provides an opportunity to showcase the talent of creative young artists in a unique and highly visible way.
Students in grades 4-12 enrolled in a public, parochial, private or home school are eligible to submit one piece of art for judging. There will be four winners; one each from elementary, middle and high school and one Best in Show winning entry. The Best in Show winning entry will be recreated into holiday banners that will be displayed on flagpoles in downtown Kingsport throughout the holiday season. Additionally, some winning entries will be printed on yard flags and sold as a means to generate funds to further arts awareness and education to area youth.
The impressive annual exhibit represents the combined efforts of the Arts Council of Greater Kingsport, the Cultural Arts Division, students, and teachers, who encourage their students to enter the competition. The top finishers will be recognized locally during the Junior League Holiday Market and will be invited to a special reception that highlights their accomplishments. The winning artwork will be displayed during the Holiday Market and then will be rotated to various locations within the city. Cash and prizes totaling more than $1,000 will be given to the creators of the winning entries. The organization from which the Best in Show entry originates will receive a $250.00 cash prize to be used by their art department.
A professional panel appointed by the ACGK will judge the submissions. Guidelines for the competition and entry forms may be downloaded from the Arts Council of Greater Kingsport website at www.kingsportARTS.org. Art teachers at area schools will also be able to provide students with entry forms and guidelines upon request. The deadline for artwork submission is September 15, 2009. Entries should be hand delivered or mailed to the ACGK office locates at Kingsport Renaissance Center, Suite 216, 1200 East Center Street, Kingsport, TN no later than 3:00 p.m. on September 15, 2009.
The Arts Council of Greater Kingsport is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Tennessee Arts Commission, as well as, the Kingsport Community Foundation (a fund of the East Tennessee Foundation), Eastman Chemical Co., the City of Kingsport’s Cultural Arts Division, and other local sponsors.
