Scholarships Available for Cherokee Heritage Study
Applications are due May 12

The Cultural Arts Division of the City of Kingsport announces 4 individual scholarships to be awarded for participation in the Museum of the Cherokee Indian’s Cherokee History and Culture Institute held July 13 – 18, 2009 in Cherokee, North Carolina.

This intensive six-day course covers archaeology, folklore, history, and linguistics. Experiences with the Cherokee community are combined with classroom discussions. Sponsored by the museum and initiated by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, this institute combines academic learning with experiences in the Cherokee community. This program is made possible through a grant from the Cherokee Preservation Foundation and the City of Kingsport, TN.

The goal of the Institute is to provide accurate information about the Cherokee (and other American Indians,) resources, and connections with Cherokee people. The class will read and discuss articles from a variety of disciplines. Interviews, field trips, and experiences on the Qualla Boundary will be integrated with academic study.

The scholarship will provide funding for tuition, required reading, meals and lodging. Candidates should be 21 years or older, have an active interest in the heritage of Kingsport and be willing to share their experiences with the community after completing their course.

To apply, the candidate should provide the following information, maximum of 2 pages, double spaced to the Kingsport Cultural Arts Division. Include in your application:

  • Applicants Contact Information
  • Name, address, telephone numbers, email
  • Provide an introduction to the Applicant
  • Education, Work and Volunteer Experience
  • Explain your interest in developing an understanding of Kingsport’s heritage
  • Suggest ways you might share the information from the Institute with others in Kingsport.
