"The Cultural Arts Division of the City of Kingsport and the Arts Council of Greater Kingsport are pleased to present the Cumberland County PlayhouseÌs production Smoke on the Mountain on Thursday, October 4, 2007, 7:30 PM at the Kingsport Renaissance Theater. Tickets are $18 for Adults, $15 for Seniors/Students and can be purchased by call the Central Box Office at 423-392-8417. This off-Broadway hit production centers around the Sanders family on a 1938 Saturday night gospel sing in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in rural North Carolina. This musical has been performed on 250 stages across the nation Ò making it the second-most performed play in regional theaters. Connie Ray, a North Carolina native and star of the DisneyÌs ÏThe TorkelsonsÓ wrote the play conceived and directed by Alan Bailey. Smoke on the Mountain centers on the Sanders family. The setting is a Saturday-night gospel sing in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, N.C. The family interaction Ò with each other and the audience (which plays the church congregation) Ò is what makes the play entertaining. The Sanders family performs several bluegrass gospel songs and sprinkled throughout the musical is each family memberÌs testimony. The Cumberland County Playhouse, located in Crossville, Tennessee, has a long and successful history of providing family theatre. The Playhouse serves over 160,000 visits annually with 450 performances and over 1600 classes and private lessons in theater, dance, and music. This is the stateÌs largest audience for Tennessee-produced theater, and is among the stateÌs largest for nonprofit performing arts performances of any kind. ÏWe are pleased to host the Cumberland County Playhouse and this excellent production,Ó said Martha Beverly, Coordinator of the Cultural Arts Division. ÏI know people will have a great time and encourage newcomers to come check out our beautiful Renaissance Center facility.Ó The Renaissance Center is a center for arts and senior citizenÌs activities, and as a facility for business meetings, parties, receptions, classes, showers and day long seminars with breakout rooms. The facility includes a 350 seat theatre, three story skylit atrium, art gallery, gymnasium, meeting rooms and offices.
